Time Management for Music Teachers

Time management is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to running your own teaching business. ‘I don’t have the time’ is a form of procrastination, and something I have been so guilty of in the past!

With 3 small children and two businesses to run, I have studied allllll the tricks to effective time management. We home-educate our youngsters, alongside running a successful music school with branches around the UK. If we hadn’t learnt to manage our time, we’d have burnt out by now! Instead, we enjoy lots of the things we love – family time, day trips,
holidays.

So….here are my top tips:

  • Time block and stick to it! Mono-tasking is the new multi-tasking. We are a society of bored people, constantly seeking something more stimulating. When we commit our brains to one task at a time, we get it done faster and our work is of much higher quality. And likewise, when you’re with the kids or the family, or enjoying your leisure time, commit to that too!

  • Set automated replies on your emails or messengers to manage expectations of when a reply is expected, and to avoid temptation to dip in and out all day. Leave a phone number if you need to be contacted for emergencies, but otherwise - know that they can wait until you are ready to deal with them

  • Outsource! If social media management is not your thing, and it’s pulling you away from something that is actually important and actually makes you money - outsource it. Outsource your accounting, your cleaning, your website management, your design work, your marketing - even your laundry if it doesn’t float your boat. Your time is so valuable, and if you are spending it doing something that isn’t important or you don’t love, find a way to change it

  • Do what you say you’re going to do. Stop messing about and just bloody do it. We all have that one task that we put off, that we hate doing, or that has forever been on our to-do list. Just get on with it!! The rest of the day will be so much more productive and fulfilling if you start with your most hated job!
