We always say to new beginners that practising is absolutely not essential when children very first join our programme. The weekly classes are enough, there is no need to apply unnecessary pressure, and we will encourage them towards practising when they have settled into their lessons.
So what then?
After the first few months, we begin gently setting practice tasks. Challenges, games, pieces to play at home. Gently building it into their routine, encouraging them to spend time at the piano in between lessons. The changes seen during this time are absolutely remarkable! Children fly! And as they improve, they want to continue to learn, they want to continue to get better – they become self-motivated in their practise!
Our Inspiring Musicians: Practice Journals can support this – helping to guide you and your child, and helping you to keep a record, which you will one day treasure.
Within our journals, you will find:
-
Space to set goals and dreams. Want to play in a concert, sit an exam, master a favourite piece? Write it down and turn that dream into a realistic target
-
Space to write down repertoire, and build 'done' lists! One of the best things about learning an instrument is watching your repertoire list stack up - all of that amazing music at your fingertips for whenever you want it!
-
Games, challenges and competitions! We will be giving away real prizes to children who complete the challenges
-
Music to listen to and remember later - always learning, always finding new inspiration
-
Areas to note down things to practise, and to record any work done and challenges faced. These journals create a dialogue between student and teacher, to allow them to tackle difficulties together, and to really see what is happening in between lessons!
