One of the biggest challenges we face is getting the balance right between parenting and running a successful business! Our 3 children are 6, 4 and 15 months, and they are home-educated – so they are at home with us alllll the time.
This is why we created Music Monsters in the first place. We wanted an impactful music teaching business that allowed us flexibility around our family. We now have the joy of supporting other incredible musicians and music teachers, to help them to find the balance in their lives, as they grow their own Music Monsters’ franchise around their lovely families.
Here are my top-tips for juggling kids and business:
-
Involve the kids, age-appropriately, as much as you can. For us, this means getting them to help hand out programmes during concerts, testing new games and activities, and doing stock checks. As they get older, we will give them more responsibilities, and help them to understand the challenges and merits of running our own business!
-
Get up one hour earlier than everyone else, and do your most urgent jobs then. I forever find myself on the back foot if I am woken up and expected to be Mum straight away. I can give them so much more of me when I know I’ve already achieved a solid hour of work.
-
Save up their screen time for important phone calls/meetings. Set them up with snacks and all their needs met, before you go off to attend anything important.
-
Put your phone down. Trying to attend to emails, texts, social media etc is just not possible when you’re distracted by the kids - and they will know they don’t have your full attention! Set aside an hour in the evening to tackle all of this in one go, rather than trying to dip in and out.
Ditching the guilt is so much easier said than done, but it is possible to reframe it. It is healthy for children to see their parents working, to know that they are doing something important, and to learn about the processes involved in this. I am proud to show my children the business that I have built, and hope that it inspires them to follow their own dreams as they grow.
