6 simple questions to check in on your work life balance
If “no” then keep reading as I’m sharing the 6 simple questions I ask myself which I think are so important to keep me on track.
Here’s the questions I ask myself to assess how I’m doing – you can use these too, if you like:
- What has gone well this month?
- What has NOT gone so well this month?
- How many hours have I worked?
- Did I hit my revenue target?
- How am I feeling?
- What do I need to change as we move into next month?
I’m going to share my answers with you here and pay attention to the little details because you’ll see there’s never a straight upward trajectory to any goal – there is always room for tweaks and changes.
We started Music Monsters to create an inspiring teaching programme that would truly impact children, while earning more money for less hours. We went into business to build a life that works beautifully around our family life. If I look back and see too many compromises, I know that something has to give.
Here’s my honest review of September:
What has gone well this month?
- I hosted our first Franchisee Celebration Day in Stratford-Upon-Avon
- We had our highest revenue month ever
- We took 3 days out for a little term-time break to Legoland
- I was a guest on Music Teachers podcast
- We ran our first workshop with the Solihull Cultural Educational Partnership, working in schools with children from Hong Kong
- We welcomed 13 new students to Music Monsters
- We sorted a new nanny for our children
- I was asked to write an article for Music Teachers magazine
- We went house shopping
- We joined the Expert Empires mastermind, and had some excellent coaching
- I planned the launch of our first ever course for music teachers
- We secured a profitable bid to be part of a local festival, providing music workshops throughout the weekend
- We were able to enjoy the start of our 4th year of home education
- I started my Christmas shopping!
What has NOT gone so well this month?
- I didn't have as much time to create as I would like to
- I spent too long procrastinating on social media
- I have felt a little anxious by the amount of things I have to do
- I have stayed up too late on too many evenings
How many hours have I worked?
I have taught for 45 hours of lessons this month, and have spent around 20 hours on content creation. I would like there to be a slight shift towards less teaching in October, and more time to create as we get towards the launch of our first course.
Did I hit my revenue target?
Yes, I exceeded it this month – it was our best ever revenue month.
How am I feeling?
I am excited for everything that October will bring, but also a little nervous about how to keep my plates spinning. Our children always come first, but our business is at a really pivotal point where it also needs lots of care and attention!
What do we need to change as we move into next month?
- I am blocking non-negotiable creation time into my diary
- I am going to run towards the things that scare me, and seek out ALL the opportunities for growth!
- I am limiting my email and social media time to just one hour per day
- I am switching off by 9pm, to ensure I can get to bed earlier
- I am tightening up my morning routine - gratitude journal, exercise, goals for the day
